Supreme Court Prevents Racially Gerrymandered Districts in Virginia

ALEXANDRIA, VA– The Supreme Court takes final action to confirm constituional maps for the Virginia House of Delegates. In a 5-4 ruling for the case, Virginia House of Delegates v. Bethune-Hill, the majority opinion stated that Republicans lack standing in their appeal of racially gerrymandered districts. Justice Ginsburg gave the majority opinion, joined by Justice Thomas, Justice Gorsuch, Justice Sotomayor, and Justice Kagan.

"This SCOTUS decision is a major win for voting rights and civil rights in our Commonwealth and for people of the 43rd district," says Delegate Sickles. "I look forward to our November elections. The new districts in Greater Richmond and Hampton Roads may lead to a Democratic majority if our '17 class is re-elected."
